If you’re like most buyers, you’ve Googled “what credit score do I need to buy a home”-and maybe winced. Here’s the truth: you probably don’t need a “perfect” score to buy a home, and small, smart moves can lift your score faster than you think.
The Real Answer (Not the Internet’s One-Size-Fits-All)
Different loans value scores differently. Bigger picture:
- Approval often happens at a wider range than people expect.
- Pricing improves as your score climbs through key “tiers.”
Translation: Even if you qualify today, every 20 to 40 points can make your payment better. That’s why we help clients raise scores before they lock a loan.
“I Didn’t Think I Could Buy” (Until This)
“I had NO clue where to start… Harpo’s free workshop gave me real answers. I never thought homeownership was possible, but they showed there’s a path forward.”
You don’t need a perfect score – you need a plan. A clear strategy, real guidance, and a place where you can ask the questions Google can’t answer. That’s exactly why we created our HomeWise Workshops, a no-pressure space to learn how your credit, budget, and goals can come together to unlock homeownership sooner than you think.
5 Quick Wins to Nudge Your Score Up
- Lower your utilization (the fastest lever).
Pay revolving balances down to under 30% of the limit (under 10% is even better). If cash is tight, target one card first – the one with the highest utilization. - Change when you pay.
Make an extra payment 5–7 days before the statement closes so the reported balance is lower. (Same dollars, better snapshot.) - Fix the easy errors.
Pull your credit and look for duplicate accounts, wrong balances, or someone else’s late mark. Dispute cleanly with documentation. - Avoid new hard pulls.
No new store cards, no “save 10% today” offers while you’re prepping to buy. - Keep old accounts open.
Closing your oldest card can shorten credit history and ding your score. Consider leaving it open – even if you barely use it.
What Score Should I Aim For?
Think in tiers, not perfection:
- “Can I get approved?” Often yes – there are programs for a variety of profiles.
- “Can I get a better payment?” That’s where +20, +40, +60 points matter.
We’ll show you how a small score bump can cut your monthly cost (and your lifetime interest).
What We’ll Do Together (in plain English)
- Check your current snapshot (and why Credit Karma ≠ mortgage scores).
- Build a 30-day Score Tune-Up (which card, how much, and when).
- Pair you with the right loan + assistance so your dollars go further
